Overnight Run

Overnight Run is built for unattended CNC time once the program, vacuum hold-down and cutter wear have been checked on a live sheet. It fits repeat MDF nesting and other steady batch work where the same path can run after the day shift hands over.

How overnight runs suit repeat MDF cutting batches

Overnight Run is for after-hours machining where the path, material hold-down and cutter condition must be settled before the shift changes. It suits repeat work that needs stable output while the floor is quieter.

Begin with the board type, sheet size and spoilboard condition before anyone leaves the machine. In South African workshops, MDF fibre, winter dryness, coastal moisture, power interruptions and late collections can all change whether an after-hours batch is worth starting.

Note the clamps, tabs or vacuum zones as run before the lights go off. Add the last successful feed, spindle speed and tool length note so the morning crew can see what changed if a sheet moved or an edge burned overnight.

What to log before lock-up

The handover should name the cutter, sheet count, cut order and any known weak point in the file. Keep the note short and exact. A marked screenshot of the toolpath and one honest failure note are more useful than a long chain of vague updates.

Link Overnight Run with the matching Hub solution only when the repeat job is stable across full sheets. Before leaving, verify extraction, dust bag capacity, tool clamping and restart position after any trip. Bit orders depend on the shank size, the material and the router you run them on.

  • Repeat sheet layout noted with cutter size
  • Vacuum zones or clamps shown in photo
  • Last failed run described in one line

South African overnight run checks

Plan unattended cutting around municipal power risk, security access and morning dispatch times in your area. A batch leaving from Johannesburg may need a different stopping point from work cut in Durban or Cape Town, especially when sheet stock for the next run is not on site yet.

Coastal humidity can swell MDF edges and affect hold-down on stored sheets. Highveld dust loads extraction quickly, so bag levels and filter condition matter before an overnight nest. When load-shedding is possible, note the safest restart point in the program rather than assuming the machine will finish in one pass.

Overnight brief contents

Brief Overnight Run with toolpath screenshots, sheet counts, and what failed on the last unattended run. Keep the subject line accurate.

Include toolpath screenshots, planned sheet quantity, material code and the fault from the previous unattended batch if there was one. That record helps the next shift decide whether to continue the same file, swap the bit, or stop the run and inspect the spoilboard.
